Cheekwood Entrance Foyer: "An Emerald Forest" -- 2025
As part of the 2025 "Sweet Holiday Dreams" holiday installation at Cheekwood Estates and Botanical Gardens in Nashville, TN, the grand entrance foyer was rendered as a serene green emerald forest of trees and topiaries, inspired by nature, classic architecture and festive holiday design. Design inspiration for the "Emerald Green Entrance Foyer" at Cheekwood Estate and Botanical Gardens (Nashville, TN): The Inspiration: Inspired by the magical evergreen woodlands of my native Pacific Northwest, the antique tapestries in the room, and the 16th-century melody “Greensleeves,” I envisioned a grand entrance in layered shades of green and gold to evoke the feeling of a winter forest. The tree and topiary designs blend romantic Tudor elegance with a sense of holiday grandeur and natural splendor. The Look: The overall aesthetic is a festive, elegant woodland theme with shimmer and sparkle to add lightness and holiday flair. Natural elements such as gilded pinecones and evergreen textures further enhance the forest-inspired mood. A color palette of emerald, moss, and chartreuse, accented with touches of gold, creates a classic and inviting ambiance that harmonizes with the architectural details and antique tapestries in the space. Technique (trees): As a foundation, large reflective ornaments were placed near the trunk to enhance illumination and interior glow. To build depth and dimension, layered garlands of green ornaments were added to extend beyond the natural profile of the tree, creating a sense of movement and organic flow. Additional elements -- including sparkling branches and ribbon swags -- were then woven throughout, resulting in an opulent, sculptural design with a richly layered effect. Design goal: My overarching goal with this design was for visitors to feel as though they stepped into an enchanted forest -- a place of beauty, serenity, and timeless holiday wonder. photo credits: @sedona_john_photographer
